Tying the K’s Butt Salmonfly

by ROBERT H. BOYLE

A

s with nymphs, there are dozens of adult patterns. My favorite is my own. Its key feature: a durable double body tied and anchored on a size 6 streamer hook with Krazy Glue, said body consisting of a length of solid quill shaft from a Canada goose or turkey primary wing feather inserted inside (and protruding slightly from both ends) of the butt end of tail feather. The protruding quill shaft at the end serves as a tying platform for the two tails (goose or turkey biots) and the black thread wound to delineate the abdominal segments. The front end of the protruding quill shaft serves as the head which has eyes of burnt 50-pound monofilament and two antennae (goose biots). The thorax is thin cork; the wings, actually just one mallard flank laid over the back; the legs six goose biots bent to shape with tweezers and fixed in place with Krazy Glue. The top of the body is colored dark brown with a permanent marker, the underside colored with an orange marker.
