CIBELLI’S NEW YORK PIZZA

Frank Cibelli grew up in New York, and he couldn’t fi nd pizza the way he liked it in Central Oregon. So in 2001, he opened a pizza parlor. Now he owns four, and his original Tumalo location has expanded into a small café. “Pizza is everybody’s favorite food,” he says.

MANGIA! PASTA!

Could the instructions be any more specific? Mangia! Eat! This delightful and casual café, off NE 27th Street in The Forum shopping center, is a great choice for a midday salad or sandwich. Evenings, the pastas (like rock-shrimp capellini) are superb, and there are ample full entrées as well. A bonus: Every table is provided with crayons, so you can design a Picasso on your paper tablecloth.

ERNESTO’S

Housed in an old church next door to the 2nd Street Theater, this is your parents’ Italian restaurant, complete with checkered tablecloths, hanging Chianti bottles and “O Sole Mio” music. Come for the pastas, but don’t miss the homemade minestrone. Locals enjoy the lunch buffet and the cellar bar.

A family standby for two decades, Giuseppe’s hasn’t changed much over the years. This is the place to come for satisfying pasta dishes or good eggplant Parmesan without too many frills. Goomba’s bar is one of downtown’s secrets.

PULEO’S RISTORANTE

J.C. Puleo’s popular restaurant is known for its generous plates of pasta—from spaghetti and meatballs to seafood fettuccine. Signature luncheon sandwiches include the Godfather Deluxe, which comes with spicy Italian sausage, peppers and onions. Puleo has opened a second restaurant at the Old Redmond Depot, Airport Way and 21st Street.

This southern-Italian country-style restaurant in the new Cascade Village shopping mall features a casual Tuscan atmosphere and a hearty menu. Twelve-layer lasagna, baked fresh daily, highlights a menu strong in meat and seafood entrées as well as pizzas and salads. Tiramisu is a dessert favorite, and there’s also “curbside to-go” service.

Housed within the refurbished brick walls of the century-old Bend Firehall, Staccato offers a traditional Italian menu that ranges from gourmet pastas to such entrées as braised shoulder of beef raviolo with Madeira sauce. The restaurant also serves a Sunday brunch.
