EDITORIAL GUIDELINES

Thank you for your interest in Bend Living, Bend Living Home and Bend Business Review publications of Cutter Communications, Inc., in Bend, Oregon.

Bend Living is a regional lifestyle magazine published for residents of (and visitors to) the Central Oregon region, including the cities of Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Sisters, Sunriver, Madras and Warm Springs.  Although we work extensively with freelance writers, we do so on assignment, and do not encourage unsolicited manuscript submissions.  Cutter Communications assumes no responsibility for unsolicited material.

If you do receive an assignment, the text of your story should be e-mailed to us.  We do not accept disks or typed stories.  We also do not publish fiction or poetry.  Bend Living and Bend Business Review buy first North American serial rights and electronic rights. The author may be requested to revise, fact-check and rewrite any article in order to make it suit the theme or space limitations of a particular issue; editors reserve the right to edit further.

Rates start at 30 cents per word, based upon assigned length.  Payment is submitted for processing after the Editor has accepted the story. Payments will be processed on the following 15th or 30th of that month. For any story chosen to be “killed” for future publication, payment is 50 percent.  Deadlines are typically three months before projected publication date.

FEATURES

Each issue of Bend Living includes feature stories of 1,200 to 2,000 words on topics such as recreation, culture and lifestyle.  Bend Living Home typically has additional features on outstanding individual homes and decorating themes.  Bend Business Review seeks stories on prominent business leaders, unusual businesses, political issues with broad implications and wider trends that local business are embracing.

We welcome queries on interesting and tightly focused articles.  Please do not query on subjects outside of Oregon.

DEPARTMENTS

Short, 500- to-1,000-word stories on a variety of subjects fill out the pages of our two magazines.  In every issue of Bend Living, appear articles on fine and performing arts, local dining, small businesses, weekend destination travel, children's activities, regional history, and profiles of community members.

Departmental stories in Bend Living Home include home decor, gardening and landscaping, "green" building, old-home restoration and new products. Most new writers begin with departmental assignments.

Bend Business Review departmental pieces include small business profiles, entrepreneurs, stories on the lives of commuters and telecommuters, personal finance issues relevant to Central Oregonians, Real Estate trends and business news with shelf-life.

ALL ARTICLES

All stories should come with photo suggestions (chart and graph suggestions for Bend Business Review) and must include contact information and other local resources when applicable.

QUERIES

Before querying, it's important to familiarize yourself with the content and approach of the magazine(s), and maintain an awareness of our affluent, active readership.  We expect that you will write to our audience, rather than forcing our readers to tune in to your particular style.  All queries may be directed via e-mail to kevin@bendliving.com.

PHOTO REQUIREMENTS

While our photo editor (production@bendliving.com) will assign a photographer to shoot art to accompany our stories, we are happy to consider a writer's own photos or art provided by the subject.  We prefer 35mm color slides or digital photos in JPG or TIF format (300 DPI or greater at 100% dimension) for reproduction.  All art must be accompanied by identifying captions and photo credits.  Photos of individuals must also have signed releases.  Photographers grant approval for use of work in media kits and any other function promoting Bend Living, including the internet.  All photos and slides will be returned after publication.
